Our Great High Priest
Eleventh Sabbath — He Always Lives to Intercede
Sequence 71 is Ayin (70) and Aleph (1). The Ayin is the eye and also the spring — sight and source in one letter; the Aleph is unity, the One. Seventy-one is a prime number, indivisible. The eye that never closes, joined to the One who cannot be divided or replaced: a priesthood that does not change hands, held by One who always lives, watching continuously over people who are frequently unaware they are being watched over.
The theme.
The Son's work did not end at the ascension; it changed office. He lives to intercede, and He does so continuously, for the people He has already saved. This is the Sabbath for the congregation's weary — those who assume they have exhausted God's patience and have quietly stopped asking.
The School of Scriptures.
I.A Priesthood That Does Not Change Hands
The argument of Hebrews 7 turns on mortality: former priests died and were replaced, but He continues forever. Teach the congregation what permanence means for their assurance — the One representing them will not be succeeded, retired or removed.
II.He Always Lives to Intercede
The present participle describes unbroken activity. While you slept, while you failed, while you were not thinking of Him, He was praying for you. Set Luke 22:31-32 beside it: I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail — spoken to Peter before the denial, not after it.
III.Who Is the One Who Condemns?
Romans 8:33-34 sets accusation against intercession and asks who will bring a charge. The answer is that the only qualified Judge is the One who died, was raised, is at the right hand and is interceding. Teach the congregation to test the voice of accusation by its source.
IV.If Anyone Sins, We Have an Advocate
John writes so that we may not sin, and then tells us what to do when we do (1 John 2:1-2). Close pastorally: the provision for failure is not a licence for it, and the believer who cannot receive the advocacy will either despair or pretend. Neither produces holiness.
The Table.
This week, come back sooner. Cut the delay between your failure and your return to God from days to minutes. And take up intercession yourself: pray daily by name this week for one person who does not know you are doing it.
