The Head of the Body

Twelfth Sabbath — Joined and Held Together

Sequence 78 is Ayin (70) and Chet (8) — the eye joined to the fence. Seventy-eight is six times thirteen, and thirteen is the value of both echad, one, and ahavah, love. A body that sees, held together within an enclosure, growing by love into one. Every element of this Sabbath's teaching is in the letters: perception of one another, connection that holds, and the oneness that love produces rather than uniformity imposes.

The theme.

Everything the quarter has taught about the Son now lands on the congregation itself. He is the head, and CMI is a body — not an audience, not a service provider, not a network of individuals with a shared preference. Teach this as the practical outcome of the whole quarter, because a Christology that never becomes ecclesiology stays theoretical.

The School of Scriptures.

I.He Is the Head, in Everything Preeminent

Colossians 1:18 gives the Son first place in the body as He has first place in creation. Address the congregation's habit of organising church life around gifted individuals: any body arranged around a member rather than the Head is describing a tumour, not growth.

II.What Every Joint Supplies

Paul's picture is of a body held together by connections — joints, not merely parts. The growth comes from what the connections supply. Apply it to attendance and relationship: a member who is present but unjoined contributes nothing to what this text describes.

III.The Parts You Would Not Choose

In 1 Corinthians 12 the members that seem weaker are declared necessary, and those we consider less honourable receive greater honour. Confront the congregation's informal hierarchy — who gets consulted, who gets thanked, who is invisible in this house.

IV.Speaking the Truth in Love

The phrase is the mechanism of the growth, not a decoration on it. Truth without love wounds; love without truth stalls; together they mature a body. Close with a specific charge: name a form of honest speech CMI needs to recover, and a form of cruelty done in truth's name that must stop.

The Table.

At the breaking of the breadWe who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. We take it together, and we refuse to eat as strangers.
At the cupFrom Him the whole body is fitted and held together. We take the cup as members joined to a Head and to each other.
The summons for the new week

This week, supply what your joint supplies. Do the one thing in this body that you can do and have been leaving to someone else. And restore one connection here that has quietly gone cold — make contact before next Sabbath.
