Sequence 36 is Lamed (30) and Vav (6) — and the pairing is the most instructive in the quarter. The Lamed is the tallest letter in the alphabet, the only one that rises above the line of writing; the Vav is the nail, a single stroke descending from above. The highest letter joined to the descending stroke, on the Sabbath the Son lays aside His garments and kneels with a towel. Thirty-six is also twice eighteen, life doubled. What descends in this letter-pair does not diminish; it multiplies.

The theme.

On the night He was betrayed, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, the Son got up from supper and washed feet. John records the knowledge and the action in the same sentence, and the connection between them is the whole teaching. He did not serve because He had forgotten who He was. He served because He had not.

The School of Scriptures.

I.Knowing, He Got Up

Security is the precondition of service. The person who is uncertain of their standing cannot afford to take the low place, because they need the high one to prove something. Teach the congregation that servanthood is not self-erasure; it is what confidence looks like when it has nothing to defend.

II.Not So Among You

In Mark 10 the Son contrasts two systems: rulers of the nations lord it over people, but it shall not be so among you. Apply it to real structures — the household, the workplace, the church committee. Authority in the kingdom is measured by who it lifts, not by who it silences.

III.He Came to Give His Life a Ransom

The foot-washing is a parable of the cross performed with water. The Son's service is not merely a moral example of humility; it culminates in substitution — the Son of Man came to serve and to give His life a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). Keep the two joined, or the passage becomes mere etiquette.

IV.You Also Ought

The Son turns example into obligation. Close by making it concrete for CMI: name the specific act of service in this congregation that nobody wants and everybody benefits from, and let the leadership do it first this week, visibly and without announcement.

The Table.

At the breaking of the breadHe laid aside His garments and took a towel. We take the bread from the hands of a Lord who knelt, and we abandon every claim to be too senior for the low place.
At the cupHe gave His life a ransom for many. We take the cup as those served at infinite cost by One who owed us nothing.
The summons for the new week

This week, take the low place once where it will not be noticed and cannot be repaid. And in the relationship where you currently hold the power, use it this week to lift the other person rather than to settle a point.
